Glycerin is created in the biodiesel production process. Furthermore, it is also obtained through fat hydrolysis, and as one of the glucose fermentation products. Glycerin can be also produced through synthetic propylene processing. In ORLEN Południe, glycerin is obtained from natural plant materials. The glycerin produced is a supplement to the manufacture of biodiesel. The raw alkali glycerin created in the biodiesel production process (fatty acid methyl ester processing) is neutralized with sulfuric acid and the forwarded to the extraction of free fatty acids, potassium sulfate, unreacted methanol and water.
